Thomas Hartley's Expedition
August 24-25, 2024 French Azilum, Towanda, PA
The Raid on Queen Esters Village and The Battle of Indian Hill in1778 will be recreated. French Azilum is located on the Susquehanna River just south of Wysox, PA, and is historic as the site that French refugees migrated to during the French Revolution. It was built in 1793.
Thomas Hartley led an expedition in the fall of 1778 in response to the Wyoming defeat by the native tribes of the Susquehanna River Valleys. Leaving Fort Muncie (present-day Muncie, PA) traveling north as far as Tioga Point (near Athens, PA) then back down the Susquehanna to Fort Wyoming at present day Wilkes-Barre, PA. A reenactment of events from this expedition is planned for August 24-25, 2024 at French Azilum.
