Burning of the Valleys: Carleton Raids

INVITATION ONLY October 22, 2022  Freedom, NH  The Burning of the Valleys: The Carleton Raids of 1780  Sponsored by the Lexington Training Band.

On August 24, 1780, Governor Haldimand proposed a series of coordinated raids from Canada into NY to "destroy the enemy's supplies from the late plentiful harvest and to give His Majesty's loyal subjects an opportunity of returning to this province."  The projected raids also had a secondary objective of demonstrating to the residents of the Hampshire Grants, who had been making questionable overtures to Haldimand about switching sides, the true strength of the British forces stationed in Canada.

By the time the raids concluded on November 14th, Carleton had destroyed two American forts, captured dozens of enemy soldiers, burned several towns and kept nearby rebel forces in check.  More importantly, he had achieved all of this with minimal casualties.

On November 7, 2020, the Lexington Training Band will be hosting a private tactical that will attempt to recreate the conditions of the October 1780 raids.  The tactical will be held on a private site that consists of over 500 acres of land, including open fields, woods, dirt road, and streams.  Activities will include a variety of both military and non-military scenarios based upon available historical documentation for the 1780 operation.

This event is invitation only but is open to Continental Line, British Brigade and BAR units as well as those organizations invited by the host unit.  Battle Road and Chase Farm clothing and equipment standards will apply to this event (including no facial hair).  Proof of unit insurance is required.   Walk-ons are not permitted.  Registration can be found in the information packet at the bottom of this page or using this link:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd9szliiFJQgoHbhlSAU0QV0EobwpRtG33ZbPBRrbRJXFygsg/viewform?hl=en.   For more information, use the contact us form at the bottom of this page.
